The Downfalls Of Long Term Birth Control Use

Learn what an extended term of the pill can do to you, and what you may do to prevent it.
Case #:867
Concern:

I have been taking birth control for about three years, and for about one week I experienced a dark brown discharge with a noticeable smell. I don't have an itch problem, but I am concerned. Is there anything I can do?
Discussion:

Though the pill has its obvious benefits, there are actually some pretty serious downfalls of birth control use that are rarely brought to a woman's attention before they begin a cycle. While a reasonable amount of vaginal discharge is perfectly fine to experience throughout the day, a heavy flow that is brown in color sends up a red flag of infection.
The Dangers Of Birth Control

This occurs when your hormone-based birth control floods the body with an exuberant amount of estrogen or progesterone. It does this in order to trick your brain into believing you are pregnant, subsequently shutting down the ovarian functionality.
Long Term Use

Over time large quantities of progesterone and estrogen will tend to accumulate in the uterus and cervix. If, for some reason, your liver fails to extract the abundant amount of extra hormone it will no longer lend support to the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.
In addition to your brownish discharge you may have also noticed some minor psychological or physiological symptoms. Mood swings and other sexual dysfunctions, including intercourse pain and orgasm difficulty are also some side effects of long term birth control use.
Different Color Discharge

The progestin imbedded in a hormone-based birth control is typically what causes the abnormally heavy discharge your experiencing. It causes this effect because of the over-stimulation of the cervix the abundant amount of progesterone brings to the body. Progestin is an artificial hormone that, along with and conjugated estrogen, can cause the uterine lining to spot with blood.
This type of spotting will actually go unnoticed if it is a very little amount, because it will stay within the vagina and fold itself back into the cervical mucus. However, if the spotting blood becomes oxidized and trapped within the vaginal walls it will turn your discharge a dark black or brown color. If the blood is trapped for too long, it will begin to produce a rather pungent odor.
Detoxification

The best way to completely cleanse your body of the overflow of progesterone and estrogen would be to stop taking the pill. If you have the opportunity, I would definitely suggest taking a six month break off of your birth control. Medical studies show that it takes about six months for the body to completely flush out the synthetic hormones included in most birth control medications.
I would also recommend utilizing herbal remedies that include Mexican Wild Yam, Fo Ti, and Muira Puama. (TRY: Vaginal Infection Relief & Detoxification Formula) These natural herbs will work together to detoxify and break down the buildup previously created by the long term birth control use.

What to do

Vaginal Infection Relief & Detoxification Formula

Antibiotics and birth control pills can alter the balance of the ‘friendly’ micro flora that subsists in the vagina. Pathogens from these drugs can result in yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis, with symptoms ranging from abnormal discharge,...
